About Armstrong
The town and the township
Armstrong is a small farming city in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia, surrounded by the rural Township of Spallumcheen. About forty minutes north of Kelowna and twenty minutes north of Vernon. The downtown is six blocks of independent shops, family restaurants, and the local hotel. The land around it is hayfields and dairy farms.
Population is roughly five thousand in the city and another five thousand spread across the township. Big enough to have what you need. Small enough that you will see the same faces at the farmers’ market every Saturday.
Country comes first
The chamber’s tagline is not marketing. Working agriculture is the economic foundation here. Hay, dairy, beef, hops, vegetables, pork, eggs. The Interior Provincial Exhibition runs every September at the IPE Fairgrounds [SOURCE NEEDED: confirm specific dates and run length], with livestock shows, harness racing, and small-town celebration on a scale most places have lost. [SOURCE NEEDED: annual attendance figure].
If you are visiting and want to understand Armstrong, go to the IPE.
The Big Cheese
Village Cheese has been making cheddar in Armstrong since 1976. The town’s identity is tied to it. The annual Big Cheese Festival celebrates regional food and beverage producers with tastings, chef competitions, and public events.
Bluegrass
[SOURCE NEEDED: confirm name of festival, season it runs, and audience description]. Bluegrass has a long-standing place in Armstrong’s summer calendar.
